Time to Chill Out … It’s Summer Break!
Remember when you were a kid … Was there a happier moment in your entire little life than when you stepped off that school bus on the last day of school and walked into the promises of summer break? Yeah, for a kid, that’s pretty much as good as it gets!
Unless it could be just a little bit better …
Imagine how happy your kiddos would be if they stepped off the school bus this year and found you waiting with an amazing welcome-to-summer treat. And what if it was healthy, too? (But you don’t have to fess up to that part!)
Really – what better way to welcome your kids home than with a cool, refreshing smoothie?
Here at THK, we love smoothies for lots of reasons. (Happily so do our kids – although maybe not for the same reasons we do!) During those hot summer days, smoothies are hydrating, cooling, and full of nutrition. And we love how totally portable they are! It’s easy to whip one up and pour it into cups as you dash out the door (which is pretty much the definition of summer … at least at my house!).
When Shelley and I first talked about posting a smoothie recipe, we asked the kids to dream up their ideal flavors. (It’s their summer break after all!)
After many excited suggestions, my youngest requested a creamsicle smoothie. Yummm – that sounded so refreshing! Well played, littlest one, well played. Now we were just as excited as the kids!
Our first batch was a bit of a happy accident. (So awesome when that happens!) It was actually based on a fruit dip recipe that didn’t quite turn out as planned. But, rather than throwing in the towel, a little light bulb went off and … there was smoothie potential!
So we started playing around with ingredients … and when we added the pineapple, we realized we’d struck gold! It still had that fabulous creamsicle taste we know and love, but it was suddenly so much more!
My kids had to be the taste-testers for at least four different batches of smoothies – so sad, right?!?! But, besides the occasional brain freeze, our efforts paid off!
Smoothie Nutrition (Fat-Free + Protein and Vitamin C!)
This smoothie has nonfat Greek yogurt to provide loads of protein and a wonderfully creamy texture, without adding any fat.
It’s also got a full cup of pineapple which, along with the orange juice, has tons of Vitamin C. Plus, it’s just so cool, so refreshing, so … summery!
How to Make This Smoothie (Easiest Directions EVER!)
Oh, wait! You probably wanted a quick explanation on how to make this recipe, right? It’s our easiest one yet!
Ready???
Measure ingredients directly into blender jar. (We usually use the biggest of our three Ninja pitchers from our favorite Ninja blender/food processor set.) Then … just blend until smooth.
That’s it! So easy!
Welcome to summer, kiddos!
Smoothie Throwback
We re-photographed this recipe post for you in April 2015, because we weren’t thrilled with our original photos for this smoothie recipe (from when we originally posted this recipe back in 2013, in our early blogging days).
But, the pic below is from our original set of photos. Even though we didn’t love those original photos, we sure did love our little banner in this shot … and just couldn’t part with this one photo! 😉
