Step #4
Then, serve!
Or, congrats, you’re prepared ahead of time … cover your yummy creation and pop it in the fridge to chill until it’s party time!
What Are White Beans?
As Healthline explains, there are a variety of types of white beans (the cannellini beans we use here being the most popular).
White beans have a nutty, earthy, umami flavor and are a nutritional powerhouse that boasts:
- High Fiber
- Packed with protein
- Lots of micronutrients
We love the twist of swapping out “typical” chickpeas, and instead using cannellini beans as the base of this fresh, flavorful, white bean hummus.
They’re a clever, Italian-inspired alternative to the usual chickpeas. And they work like a charm!
But Wait … Hummus Without Tahini?
Yep, in strictest definition, hummus is made with:
- Chickpeas
- Usually tahini
… Neither of which we’ve used in this recipe.
BUT we excluded chickpeas and tahini from this recipe for a lot of reasons.
And while it’s not exactly traditional, we’re in good company. In recent years, the foodie world has taken it upon itself to bestow the name “hummus” upon pretty much any pureed, bean-based cold dip. (Even our Edamame Hummus and Mexican Fiesta Black Bean Hummus bear the name!)
Lots of fun flavor riffs are possible when you step a little outside the box!
We also wanted to capitalize on the unique, umami flavor of cannellini beans. Plus, won’t you feel so much classier telling your friends this isn’t an average hummus recipe, it’s “a white bean hummus with sun dried tomatoes and fresh basil” recipe. Uh-huh … cue the ooooooohs and aaaaaaaahs!
So what about the tahini? Tahini adds smoothness and flavor to “normal” hummus, but we felt the white beans already checked that box.
We also know that tahini isn’t a very common ingredient in a lot of households … and including specialty ingredients wouldn’t be very “5-minute appetizer” of us, would it?!?
Trust our esteemed taste testers (who totally LOOOOVED this) — this hummus is beyond perfect. Super unique and really delicious!

I’m a big fan of hummus, though I’ve never tried a white bean version. That needs to change as soon as possible, seeing how nice, creamy and delish yours look. Seriously, I need to try this stuff. Basil + sundried tomato?? A wonderful combo, for sure!
Have a great weekend 😀
I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone who didn’t love hummus!! It’s just plain awesome! 🙂
Yeah – not gonna lie … this doesn’t last long at either of our homes! It’s gone in a flash – so delicious!! Yes – try it!! Soon!! ~Gretchen
Ok this looks DELICIOUS!! I have been loving sun dried tomatoes lately. I’m adding them to everything!
Christine – this is the hummus for you! I love sun dried tomatoes, too!! Once they are combined with the fresh basil … mixed together with the creamy white beans – oh! So amazing! I’m telling ya – gotta make this now! 🙂 ~Gretchen
what is siracha and what can I use to substitute.
Hi, Gloria! Sriracha is a type of hot chili sauce that originated in Thailand and is now commonly found in the Asian section of most large grocery stores. Its main components are chili, sugar, salt, garlic and vinegar. Its flavors are slightly different from, say, Tabasco or Frank’s RedHot Sauce or a Mexican hot sauce like Tapatio, and those are also slightly more watery (which really shouldn’t have much impact in this recipe), but if you can’t find Sriracha and have those on hand, just try subbing one of them instead. Another common sub is Sambal Oelek, which is a thick Indonesian chili-garlic sauce that’s also pretty easy to find in most American grocery stores these days. Where sauces like Tabasco, Frank’s and Tapatio are a bit thinner than Sriracha, Sambal Oelek is a bit thicker, but again, for this recipe, that slight difference shouldn’t matter, and you can easily adjust the final thickness of your hummus by adjusting the amount of water you add, if that’s a concern. Finally, in desperation, you can leave the Sriracha out, although it really, truly does add a specific background flavor that makes this hummus complete. I hope that helps and makes it easier for you to make this SOOOOON! Thanks for the great question, Gloria! ~Shelley
Lacking sirachi sauce, I have to ask if any hot sauce, such as Franks, will do.
Hi, Aunt Kay! Thanks for asking! For more details, check out my answer to Gloria (above). But, yes, Frank’s should work just fine. The hot sauce doesn’t make this hummus spicy at all, but just adds a subtle yet really important background flavor. I hope you love it as much as we do! I whipped some up quickly a few nights ago (I was running late with dinner and my husband usually walks in the door RAVENOUS), and almost the entire batch was gobbled up before dinner (by just my little family!). It’s so good, and so full of healthy ingredients, that you can really feel good snacking on it! ~Shelley
Love this recipe. White beans are my fave and this has so many great flavors. I’ll need a spoon, please!
How about if we FedEx you a double-batch of hummus to go with that spoon!?!? 😀 ~G&S
